What Is Drainage Board?

A drainage board is a geosynthetic product designed to manage subsurface water by providing a drainage layer that protects structures from water buildup. It is typically made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with dimples or channels that create space for water to flow away from foundations, retaining walls, basements, tunnels, and green roofs.

Drainage boards help reduce hydrostatic pressure, prevent water infiltration, and extend the life of waterproofing systems.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Material: High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

  • Compressive Strength: ≥ 200–800 kPa

  • Thickness: 8–20 mm (varies by model)

  • Drainage Capacity: ≥ 1.0–3.0 L/s·m

  • Thermal & Chemical Resistance: Excellent

  • Surface Type: Dimpled, cuspated, or with geotextile filter layer

Applications of Drainage Board

Drainage boards are commonly used in construction and landscaping to ensure effective water drainage and moisture control. Key applications include:

Foundation Protection: Used to prevent water from accumulating against foundation walls, reducing the risk of water seepage and structural damage. Often applied in basements, retaining walls, and damp-proofing systems.

Landscaping: Placed under garden beds and landscaping projects to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging around plant roots.

Retaining Walls: Helps to manage water pressure behind retaining walls by allowing water to flow freely and preventing hydrostatic buildup.

Green Roofs and Roof Gardens: Used in green roof systems to provide drainage while maintaining the health of the soil and plant life.

Road and Highway Construction: Provides drainage solutions for road foundations and embankments, helping to prevent water accumulation and roadbed settlement.

Stormwater Management: Used in stormwater detention systems to manage excess water and reduce runoff in urban areas and construction sites.

Its warp and weft interlaced structure gives it excellent tensile and tear resistance, effectively maintaining the overall stability of the soil under long-term loads. When laid between different material layers, it physically blocks the interlocking of soil and stone aggregates, preventing engineering structure failure caused by mixing.

The mesh pore structure promotes rapid lateral drainage of water flow, significantly reduces the hydrostatic pressure in the soil, and avoids waterlogging and softening the foundation. The chemical corrosion resistance and UV aging resistance ensure long-term durability. At the same time, the material is light, tough and easy to lay, and can quickly adapt to complex terrain construction.
